Canne’s Opening Film Announced

Rufus Norris’ Broken, starring Cillian Murphy and Un Certain Regard jury president Tim Roth, is opening Cannes‘ Critics’ Week section this year. A closing-night film has not been announced.

Celebrating its 51st running, the  sidebar is coming off of a strong 2011 showcase for rising talent. Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter took the top Critics’ Week prize in 2011, and this year he is in the official competition with Mud. Also in 2011, Australia’s Justin Kurzel was given a special mention for Snowtown, which went on to win six Australian Film Institute prizes, while Valérie Donzelli’s Declaration Of War opened the section and became France’s entry for the foreign-language Oscar. This year’s Critics’ Week runs May 17-25. Here’s the list of contenders:

Branagh in talks to Direct Jack Ryan Reboot with Chris Pine

Kenneth Branagh In Talks to Direct Chris Pine in the Jack Ryan Reboot

Paramount has been planning a rebooted adventure for Tom Clancy‘s signature character, Jack Ryan, for some time now.  The studio found its Ryan in Chris Pine following his terrific turn as James Tiberius Kirk in 2009’s Star Trek, but getting the project off the ground hasn’t been so easy.  Last week it suffered what could’ve been a big setback when it lost its director, but apparently Paramount found a replacement right quick.

Kenneth Branagh is apparently in negotiations with the studio to take on the film, which we’ll refer to as Jack Ryan for the sake of expediency.  That’s according to Vulture, in an article that points out that Branagh delivered a summer blockbuster to Paramount and Marvel Studios with Thor before Disney bought Marvel.

Javier Bardem spotted as Villain in new JB film

Javier Bardem won an Academy Award for “No Country for Old Men,” in which he played one of the scariest baddies in cinematic history. Now, the Spanish star is back to his villainous ways in the upcoming James Bond flick, “Skyfall,” and he looks a lot more blond than we’ve ever seen him before.

The first photos from the film set have leaked online, and they show Bardem, who reportedly plays a villain named Silva (obsessed with world destruction, natch), looking anything but evil as a London police officer in disguise.

Little is known about the plot, except that Bond’s MI6 agency is under attack and “007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”

Bardem isn’t the only Oscar winner associated with “Skyfall.” Dame Judi Dench returns as M, and Sam Mendes (“American Beauty“) will serve as director. The film also features five-time Oscar nominee Albert Finney and two-time nominee Ralph Fiennes. Not to mention the man we’re all counting on to save the world, Daniel Craig as James Bond.

If blond hair if good enough for 007, why wouldn’t it also work for his nemesis?

“Skyfall,” the 23rd Bond movie, hits theaters in November.

New ‘Bourne Legacy’ with Jeremy Renner

After keeping pretty quiet on the promotional front, Universal Pictures chose February to start selling The Bourne Legacy.  Today sees a whole new image of Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, an exceedingly industrious and dangerous graduate of an assassin-training program very much like Treadstone, the secret operation that created Matt Damon‘s Jason Bourne.

The teaser trailer that debuted two weeks ago did a pretty damn good job of introducing the rather odd notion that a Bourne movie doesn’t necessarily need Jason Bourne by playing up familiar stylistic elements of the franchise and incorporating familiar faces from previous installments.  Still, it seems as though a substantial portion of the audience isn’t too keen on an ass-kicking adventure without Damon or Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass.

Tony Gilroy, who had a hand in oh-so loosely adapting Robert Ludlum‘s novels for the previous three films, takes over as director here.  Gilroy made his directorial debut in 2007 with Michael Clayton and followed that Oscar-nominee up with Duplicity in 2009.

With Renner beating the hell out of people and jumping off stuff in the lead role, Gilroy’s surrounded him by an impressive supporting cast that includes series standbys Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, and Albert Finney, along with franchise newbies Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Corey Stoll, and Stacy Keach.

The Bourne Legacy does its leaping in theaters on August 3rd.

“Game Change” : Politics Would Never Be The Same

Sneak Peek new key art supporting the film “Game Change”, directed by Jay Roach, based on the book “Game Change” by journalists John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.
The new film covers events surrounding the Republican Party during the 2008 US Presidential Election, with significant focus on the introduction of then-Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin as the vice-presidential nominee.
Produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman,  the HBO Films, Playtone production will be released March 10, 2012.
Is anybody else amazed how much Ed Harris and Julian Moore look like the originals?
