Big Blackberry App Producer Bails

Seesmic might have the sweetest Twitter app for Blackberry, but the Blackberry’s appeal isn’t sweet enough. Seesmic is discontinuing support for its Blackberry app on June 30.

Research in Motion, the company that makes the Blackberry, is going through a rough spot right now. But things must be pretty bad if Seesmic bailing. This is Seesmic, folks! They’ll build an app for any platform, evenWindows Phone 7.

The truth is that startups can only support so many mobile platforms. Other mobile developers might be feeling the same pressure to drop Blackberry or never create an app for it in the first place. Seesmic is definitely not alone in its assessment of the platform. Mobile Roadie recently concluded the same thing: the Blackberry is too hard to develop for and engagement is low.

What are Seesmic Blackberry users to do? On its blog, the company encourages “those effected by this change to try out Seesmic for Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7.” In other words, get a new phone.

Taco Bell’s behavioral puzzle – “We haven’t even been able to give away the food, never mind figure out how to sell it online”

Speaking to a group of Northwestern University marketing students, Yum! Brands Chief Public Affairs Officer Jonathan Blum shared the story of recent Taco Bell promotion flop that shows the difficulty the chain has had turning social media into a viable business model. Said Blum: “We haven’t even been able to give away the food, never mind figure out how to sell it online.”

Over the course of a year, the number of friends on Taco Bell’s Facebook page rocketed from 500,000 to 6 million fans. Sounds great. Then, in the middle of an ongoing unflattering lawsuit about the quality of its beef, Taco Bell decided to offer those 6 million fans a free taco — no strings attached. They didn’t need to buy anything. They were already Facebook fans, which means they had already paid the very minor costs of “liking” Taco Bell. It was an offer from a company that Blum says wanted to tell its fans, hey, come and get a free taco.

Two hundred thousand people did. Almost 97 percent on passed on free grub they supposedly “liked.”

Cases like that explain why the bulk of Taco Bell’s marketing budget goes to television (and some radio) ads. Social media remains a small part of the budget because the company hasn’t figured out how, in Blum’s words, to use it to “make the cash register ring.”

Inside Facebook’s Next Billion Dollar Business

Facebook’s road to becoming a $100 billion company is to infect every sector of the internet with its social graph, letting other companies build and expand their business on top of it and taking a toll in exchange for that.

Facebook is now number one in display advertising, which is a $2 billion business for them.

Facebook is the enabler of social games, which is now a multibillion dollar industry, and takes a cut through advertising and credits.

Facebook is staffing up and partnering with Amazon to drive commerce through Facebook.

But the next big endeavor is music, Giga Om says in a report revealing Facebook’s upcoming big social music service.

Here’s how it will look, according to Giga Om: your Facebook homepage will include a Music tab leading to a Music Dashboard where you will be able to listen to music and see what music your friends are listening to.

Facebook will partner with Spotify but also other services to provide the service. There have long been talks of some kind of big partnership between Spotify and Facebook when it launches in the US, but it seems that it’s only a small part of a much broader endeavor to build a huge social music service.

The goal is to do for music what it did for games: use its social graph to help Facebook users discover music and help music startups get users.

At eG8 Forum, Mark Zuckerberg said he thought the next industry to get disrupted by social, after games, would be music, and then movies.

It’s not clear if and how Facebook can make money directly from music. Facebook can take a 30% cut off social games because virtual goods have zero marginal costs. By contrast songs streamed over the internet (at least legally) have high licensing costs; indeed, most internet streaming businesses have unprofitable unit economics. It doesn’t seem likely that internet music startups can afford to pay yet another tollmaster.

However, a music dashboard would get Facebook users to stay on Facebook.com all through the day if that’s where they stream music from, and so they would see a lot more ads.

Also, it’s a nice swipe at Apple if their music service ends up rocking and being really good, given how undewhelming Apple’s own social music service Ping has been. The rivalry between Apple and Facebook is heating up in a big way with Apple integrating Twitter deeply into iOS and Facebook trying to bypass Apple’s app store with an app platform based on HTML5.

Disney Starts Work on another “Tron” Sequel

In the build-up to the last December’s release of Tron: Legacy, it was abundantly clear that Disney was hoping to kickstart a new franchise after the original Tron laid dormant for almost two solid decades.  Provided that the sequel performed up to par, director Joseph Kosinski seemed likely to return, along with screenwriters Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.  After six months with little to no movement on another adventure in the Grid, Disney has hired a new writer, David DiGilio, to tackle a hypothetical third Tron film.

THR’s Heat Vision reports that Kitsis and Horowitz were unable to return for another round because of their commitment to the new ABC fantasy series Once Upon a Time, which the duo created and will executive produce.  Interestingly, DiGilio, the writer of the 2006 Paul Walker-sled dog film Eight Below and a graduate of Disney’s writers program, also just got involved in a television series of his own creation.  He recently sold a pitch for a postapocalyptic medical drama titled Last H.O.P.E.(Hospital on Planet Earth) to Showtime.

Tron: Legacy, which starred Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde, grossed $400 million worldwide.  It was also hugely expensive to produce and market, meaning that the profit margin was thin.  As such, Disney has not yet committed to another entry in the series.  Apparently, the decision to go ahead with a David DiGilio-penned sequel will largely depend on the reception to Tron: Uprising, an animated series set to air on Disney XD next year.

That series, commissioned before Tron: Legacy‘s release, bridges the gap between the 1982 original and its 2010 predecessor.  It will feature the voices of Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, and Bruce Boxleitner.  Kitsis and Horowitz are producing.

As for Joseph Kosinski, Disney recently let go of the director’s project Horizons, aka Oblivion, which he is currently developing it at Universal.  Tom Cruise set to star in the science fiction epic, with production scheduled to begin this Fall.  It’s unknown whether that means he would be unable to return to Tron, should a sequel actually come to pass.

Samuel L. Jackson Talks The Avengers Script Leak

It has been widely publicized that Samuel L. Jackson had his The Avengers shooting script stolen and latersold on the black market.

Today, Samuel L. Jackson has come forward to talk about how the theft actually occurred, and how he was scolded by Walt Disney and Marvel Studios for letting this happen.

This is what Samuel L. ackson had to say about the notorious incident.Samuel Jackson talks The Avengers script leak

“When they sent me the new version of the script, I was shooting a film in Toronto (Canada) and my assistant copied it from the email (and printed it) in the office somewhere. And by the time we got to Albuquerque someone had stolen the script out of the printer and put it online for sale. I didn’t know printers had memories. And apparently my assistant didn’t either. Marvel/Disney kind of got really upset about it. It caused a minor storm of investigation. They sent a team of investigators to Canada. They were trying to find (track down) the IP address of the person that put it online. It was crazy.”

No one has been arrested in the theft of Samuel L. Jackson‘s script. Neither Marvel nor Disney have ever made any official comments in regards to this infamous incident.

The Avengers comes to theaters May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonChris EvansChris HemsworthSamuel L. JacksonDon CheadleClark GreggTom Hiddleston. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Disney Set Date for “The Lone Ranger”

Just a few months ago, it looked as though we might not be seeing director Gore Verbinski‘s The Lone Ranger until 2014, but Disney is moving ahead with the high-profile revival of the serialized western hero and his sidekick Tonto, played respectively by Armie Hammerand Johnny Depp.  According to Deadline, the House of Mickey has just set the film for release on December 21, 2012.

The Lone Ranger is a reunion between Depp and Verbinski, who previously made hay with the first three films in the Pirates of the Caribbean  franchise.  Though Verbinski did not to return for this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, he did work with Depp on the animated western Rango.  Also on board from the Pirates franchise is uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer.  The screenplay is written by Justin Haythe, who previously contributed to The Clearing, and adaptedRevolutionary Road.

Since their first appearance on a serialized radio adventure in 1933 and continuing through media including television, film, and pulp novels, the Commanche Tonto has been the reliable sidekick of the heroic Texas Ranger, but this new version will give Johnny Depp‘s Tonto a more central role, rather than simply supporting Armie Hammer.  Verbinski and Depp have both previously commented that the film will have a new spin on the established dynamic, with Verbinski asserting that it is thematically inspired by “Don Quixote.”

The December 21, 2012 date is just one week after the December 14th debut of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first half of director Peter Jackson‘s adaptation of the Lord of the Rings prequel.  The Lone Ranger‘s release is currently shared by Phillip Noyce‘s submarine thriller Hunter-Killer and Life of PiAng Lee‘s take on the novel by Yann Martel.

Martin Campbell discusses the Future of “Green Latern” and James Bond

New Zealand-born director Martin Campbell is no stranger to franchise filmmaking.  Most famously, he rejuvenated the James Bond series on two separate occasions with two very different Bonds: first with Pierce Brosnan in 1995’s GoldenEye, then yet again with Daniel Craig in Casino Royale more than a decade later.  He also directed both The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro, but even those blockbusters are relatively small in comparison with Green Lantern, his first comic book movie.  At a press conference for the film, Campbell shared his thoughts not only on the future of Green Lantern, but also the Bond franchise and Warner Bros’ upcoming DC Comics projects.

The first cinematic adventure of Hal Jordan contains many an Easter Egg setting up possibilities for potential sequels, and Warner Bros is hoping to turn Green Lantern into a series of reliable blockbusters.  While many directors of a film like this one commit to multiple entries of a franchise, Campbell has opted not to return.  Asked if he is signed on for a trilogy, he answered, “No,” and explained, “I’ve only just finished this one.”

After creating an entire army of intergalactic Lanterns and the dense universe they inhabit while delivering appropriately epic summer movie action, the director is eager for a change of pace.  “I’m going to do a little film,” he said, laughing.

Though he won’t be returning for a second round of spacefaring superheroics, Campbell was very much conscious that he was creating a template for future installments. “This film has become the instruction manual if they do any further ones,” he explained in an interview last month.  “It’s what we call pipe laying.”

At the press conference, he confirmed that he has no intention of returning to helm any more Martini-sipping espionage with the James Bond series.  He was also asked about his feelings on Quantum of Solace, the Marc Forster-directed follow-up that quite directly continued where Casino Royale left off but was not nearly as well received.  “I thought it was lousy,” he responded.  “I thought the story was pretty uninteresting.  I didn’t think the action was, kind of, related to the characters and I just though overall it was a bit of a mess, really.”

Despite that, he is confident that the mysterious, still-untitled Bond 23 will exceed its predecessor.  He said, “Hopefully this next one will be worth it.  Sam Mendes is directing it and I’m sure it’ll be terrific.”

While Marvel Studios has been setting up the elaborate interconnected world of The Avengers and 20th Century Fox has rebooted the Merry Mutants with X-Men: First Class, Warner Bros has been more deliberate in their cultivation of their DC Comics heroes.  Campbell brushed off the notion that Warners is feeling pressure to compete.  “They want to get it right,” he said of the studio’s approach to the iconic comic book characters.

Not only that, but he also offered a quick update on Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises and Zack Snyder‘s Superman reboot, Man of Steel, saying, “They’re shooting Batman now, as you know, and Superman begins shooting in about six weeks or ten weeks.”

Those two DC movies won’t hit theaters until next July and December, respectively, but Martin Campbell‘s Green Lantern will debut in 3D this June 17th.  The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Tim Robbins, Temuera Morrison, Angela Bassett, and the voices of Michael Clarke Duncan and Geoffrey Rush.
